Someone who has the ability to be alone, responsible for all work of epic proportions like Vvilderness and his debut album, Devour The Sun, undoubtedly, deserves all our deference and recognition. Ferenc Kapiller the Hungarian mastermind behind Vvilderness with just “a paper, a pen, a guitar and a computer," as in his own words, released on 27th October the most superb album of atmospheric black metal of 2017. But you must know that Kapiller is not a new name on the scene, he started the instrumental post-rock project called Rain Catalogue in October 2011, then changed the name into Release The Long Ships and in November 2014 released the debut album named Vvilderness. In May 2016 the album Holocene was released, a beautiful instrumental atmospheric post-rock album. Now Kapiller decided to go a bit more extreme with Vvilderness.
The new effort, Devour The Sun, is an opulent selection of magical synths, various samples, analogue sounds, visionaries soundscapes with delightful melodies. In Devour The Sun this genius dives deep into the atmospheric field of black metal aligned with post-black metal and supreme blackgaze. In all senses I see just perfection, he did all the artwork for his albums, his dexterity to write emotive and soul touching lyrics are just jaw-dropping.
"Starless Dark" and "Life" are instrumental tracks of extreme beauty and excitement, with impressive acoustic guitar. Dark melodies shown in captivating blast beats. Highly atmospheric and melancholic, yet like in the whole album, there is no deathly despair nor a heavy and suffocating darkness, instead, just beauty of emotions transformed into music. Undoubtedly, you will be sucked into the lively emotional atmosphere, a real journey of pure beauty. All of the tracks are in perfect harmony with each other, I could not find a single slide. The track "Sól" delivers the beauty that can coexist with chaos and the glorious melancholic riffs show this feature. The otherworldly "New Earth" offers some amazing soul touching melodies and very well inserted folkish/celtic elements. "Aftershine", the last track on the album is long, epic, not even for a bit dull, on the contrary, you will not even feel how the time passes by. Special attention to the gloomy riffs in contrast with blasting drums and blackened rasps that make this track a real stand out.
Ferenc Kapiller is a full-fledged artist, and as difficult as it is to build an album of this proportions, Kapiller really does not need anyone else next to him to toast us with masterpieces of the atmospheric genre. He is an excellent writer of poetry, yes, because it is not just songs, the lyrics also matter. An excellent draftsman, excellent musician, and everything else you want to think exists in the making of an album. An epic and emotional work like this demands time, herculean dedication and certainly we can even wait a few years for a new album, because without a doubt it will be excellent.
There are few bands, label-backened or independent, that can craft emotive materials the way that this man do. Both Vvilderness and Release The Long Ships are highly recommended for those who want beauty in darkness. Masterpieces that are not just for fans of the genre, but for all lovers of fine dark music art!
