Helsinki Vampires are back! If you were like me and though they went on a drastic and sad decline with Back In Blood, you are in for a treat. And if you decided that after that below average release you will not give the Finnish vampires another chance – make an effort. The 69ers are not dead and gone, they are just fashionably late. But they arrived with style, shimmering elegance and just the right amount of eye make up.
The 69 Eyes are the pioneers (and probably the only band) of the self proclaimed genre called goth n' roll, that have been around for 20 years. But it was not until early 2000s, that they truly established they sound, with Blessed Be and Paris Kills, which are the band’s best and most respected albums. The later Devils and Angels had their precious moments as well, but the 2009 album Back In Blood left so many fans cold. Very cold. The whole idea of this album was too much Hollywood driven and the album held merely a couple of good songs, while the rest of the album was just a bunch of boring fillers. So we waited.
The band's front man Jyrki69 stated, X was going to be band's heaviest and darkest album. Is it? No. Is it dark and heavy? Most definitely! X has that sharp gothic touch that makes 69 what they are. It varies from uplifting gothic rock anthems, slow, dark and heart-breaking ballads and the 80s synth pop driven songs. It has passion, diversity, harmony and atmosphere. The influences on this album vary all the way from The Cult to Type O Negative. You can put X on at a party and dance along their rock n roll guitars all night long or simply pour yourself a glass of red wine and enjoy in their gloomy ambient. Lyrically this album is more down to Earth than their previous works. There are no stories about vampires, but the whole vampiric idea remains and is softly transferred to the idea of (im)mortal love on so many different levels. Jyrki69’s vocals are, as always, astonishing. He delivers so flawlessly and effortlessly, it’s almost supernatural. He sounds profoundly obscure, demonic and rebellious and the songs would not each have its own atmosphere without his perfect performance.
“The 69 Eyes is like Batman, we always rise and return, our only mission being to save Gotham City and serve its people. Everybody else is gone, nobody does it better & someone's got to do it.” is what the band stated about themselves. And just as Dark Knight Rises was the best Batman movie in years, X is the best The 69 Eyes release in years. And yes, no one else can do it better, so fortunately, we still have 69 doing it. With style!
