Ukrainian romantic metal band Season Of Melancholy has completed their second full‑length album, In Sleep, set for release on 4 September. Written between 2018 and 2024, the record spans twelve tracks and over forty‑three minutes of material shaped by years of upheaval and transformation.
Ahead of the album’s arrival, the band has recently unveiled a live video for “Inmate”, filmed during recent performances. The clip offers the first glimpse into In Sleep, capturing both the emotional gravity and renewed energy that define the new chapter.
In Sleep marks a significant evolution for Season Of Melancholy. While their trademark melancholic lyricism and atmospheric sound remain central, the album embraces stronger influences from post‑punk, gothic rock, and a more dynamic, festival‑ready approach. The band describe this shift as a conscious return to their roots, adapted for a younger, more energetic audience.
“We want to be closer to younger listeners drawn to vibrant, powerful music today,” the band explains. “But it’s equally important not to lose the atmosphere and emotional depth that define who we are.”
The album’s title reflects on those who leave the world in their sleep — once a romantic idea to the vocalist, now transformed into something far more complex and unsettling. That theme resonates deeply with the album’s difficult creation. In February 2022, the band realised they had enough material for a full‑length release. One day later, Russia launched its full‑scale invasion of Ukraine, forcing the project into years of delays, relocations, and recording sessions interrupted by missile strikes, air‑raid sirens, and power outages.
“We wrote these songs across three completely different eras of our lives: stability, the uncertainty of COVID‑19, and the horror of full‑scale war,” the band says. “That’s why the album carries such a wide range of moods and emotions.”
Throughout the process, Season Of Melancholy continually reshaped the material — rewriting, discarding, rebuilding, and reuniting. The result is an album about personal and artistic growth, one that acknowledges music’s constants while embracing its limitless possibilities.
Blending melancholic lyricism, controlled aggression, and anxious reflections on the modern world, In Sleep stands as the band’s most diverse and emotionally charged work to date.
