Inspired by the dark and gory historical figure Elizabeth Bathory, the infamous Blood Countess, Swanwriter delivers a haunting and dynamic new track, "The Painted Valley", lifted from their forthcoming sophomore full‑length, Melodies Of Despair, set for release on 26 June.
In the late 16th and early 17th centuries, the Hungarian noblewoman was alleged to have murdered hundreds of girls and young women, bathing in their blood in a bid for eternal youth. "In 'In The Painted Valley', the protagonist is a young orphan taken in by a seemingly kind figure. By the end of the track, she discovers that this guardian is in fact an evil witch secretly killing them to bathe in their blood", explains project creator Koda.
A solitary piano arrangement opens "The Painted Valley" before the music shifts into a waltz, the piano joined by a pair of acoustic guitars. A heavy explosion arrives as drums and distorted electric guitars crash into the mix, steadily building the track's intensity. Atmospheric and powerful, the shadows deepen as harsh vocals growl into life.
The genre fusion continues throughout the track's progressive, narrative‑driven composition. Falsetto vocals rise in the chorus, supported by a string trio that adds an eerie, spectral undercurrent, before the song returns to its heavier assault. A minimalist passage of classical guitar and piano follows, guiding "The Painted Valley" toward its foreboding, cinematic conclusion.
Swanwriter is a dark progressive metal project based in Vancouver, British Columbia, created and performed entirely by the anonymous multi‑instrumentalist Koda. Formed in 2023, the project emerged from a desire to merge progressive metal songwriting with classical composition, atmospheric storytelling, and emotionally charged arrangements.
Having studied classical piano from an early age before later discovering extreme metal, Koda developed Swanwriter as a space to explore long‑form composition without stylistic limitation. The music draws from progressive and experimental metal as well as classical composers such as Bach, Beethoven, and Chopin, resulting in works that emphasise dynamics, texture, and narrative pacing.
Swanwriter debuted with There Is A Darkness in June 2023, establishing a sound centred on extended structures, melodic development, and cinematic atmosphere. Rather than prioritising technical display, the project focuses on mood, storytelling, and cohesion across full‑length releases.
Themes throughout Swanwriter's work often intersect with psychological horror, melancholy, and introspection, influenced by horror games, film soundtracks, and dark ambient music. Each release is conceived as a complete artistic statement, with careful attention to sequencing, emotional progression, and sonic detail.
Operating independently, Swanwriter remain a studio‑focused project, with future ambitions including composing for horror and narrative‑driven media. Link
