Belgium‑based darkwave/gothic outfit Velvet Mist have released their new single “Down”, taken from the band’s forthcoming concept EP The Shape Of Losing Light, scheduled for release on 5 June. While the EP traces a continuous descent through erosion, dimming perception, and emotional dissolution, “Down” marks its most shadowed and destabilised point.
Built around themes of disorientation, isolation, and collapsing inner structures, the track pushes Velvet Mist’s sound into a tenser, more immersive realm. Its atmosphere feels suspended between numbness and freefall, capturing the moment where clarity fractures and the narrative reaches its deepest rupture.
The band states: “Rather than introducing the project, ‘Down’ deepens it. It functions as a central fragment of a work designed to be experienced as one continuous movement.”
Conceived as a seamless emotional arc, The Shape Of Losing Light rejects the idea of standalone tracks. The pieces “Sway”, “In Liminal”, and “Valley Of Dreams” merge into a single uninterrupted composition, forming the EP’s structural and emotional core. Across its duration, the release explores decay, transition, and disintegration — a slow descent into vanishing forms and shifting psychological landscapes.
Operating within a contemporary interpretation of goth and the post‑punk revival, Velvet Mist draw heavily from the spectral sonic world of the 1980s. Their material will resonate with listeners of The Sisters Of Mercy, Lebanon Hanover, and Twin Tribes. Link
