A cinematic descent into beautifully haunted terrain.

Those who keep an eye on the more obscure corners of the darkwave spectrum have almost certainly stumbled upon the name World, Interrupted. The Polish duo made a convincing entrance with their EPs Deception, Follow Me (2021), and When You See Me, Run (2024), but last year, Marta and Piotrek returned with something far more ambitious: their first full‑length album, Sorrow, Bring Me Joy. Released through the cult Polish label Requiem Records, the album offers eight original tracks and a bonus remix, forming a work that seeks beauty precisely where it appears absent. The result is a soundworld steeped in darkness and weight, woven into a cinematic sonic tapestry that still, at times, pulses with dance‑floor potential.

Some may roll their eyes at the prospect of yet another darkwave duo. True, the scene is overflowing with them, and personally, I’m not complaining — the abundance has brought us plenty of excellent music. World, Interrupted, however, stands apart. Rather than leaning heavily on club‑driven beats, they build their identity on atmosphere. On this album, the sound they shaped on earlier releases is not merely refined; it is expanded into something more cinematic, more dramatic, more immersive, and undeniably darker. Marta and Piotrek have crafted an experience that envelops you, pulls you into shadowed yet strangely sweet emotional spaces, and then jolts you awake just when you think you want to stay there forever.

The opening intro, “The Ritual”, tinged with subtle oriental influences, immediately signals that what follows will be addictive. It feels like a passage into a dream‑realm — a nightmare, perhaps — a darkened room that is unsettling yet so strangely beautiful that you hope not to wake. “Shadows Of My Mind” marks the true beginning, drawing the listener into a trance. Deep, echoing, minimalist pulses with a hint of industrial grit create the perfect foundation for gentle swaying, while the hypnotic, yet somehow cold vocals and mystical synth textures conjure an intensely emotional, shadow‑soaked atmosphere.

The album is dynamic, shifting between brooding ambience and more dance‑oriented moments. The Polish‑sung “Bez Ciebie Nic” stands out in this regard, later receiving an even more minimalist, club‑leaning remix by Hiroszyma, included as a bonus track. One of the album’s undeniable highlights is the hypnotic, ritualistic “Now I’m Your God”, driven by an addictive rhythm, entrancing vocals, and electronic elements that plunge the listener deeper into the dark. Sensual, mystically erotic, and tinged with melancholy, it builds tension to a climax with sharp guitar accents and vocal lines that echo like a cry for help.

As the album progresses, we continue exploring the hidden corners of that darkened room into which we were thrown at the start. It is not yet time to wake; instead, we follow the shivers and the ghosts lurking in the shadows towards a blurred light that proves far less alluring than the fog‑filled, twilight‑drenched space World, Interrupted offers. The heavy, atmospheric and psychedelically hypnotic “The Odd One Out” and “Should I” provide room for introspection — moments to sink into one’s own thoughts and emotions, searching for self‑reflection and solace — before Marta and Piotrek gently rouse us from this sweet nightmare with the subtly notorious “Wake Up”.

As its title suggests, Sorrow, Bring Me Joy is an album for those who find pleasure in the sweetness of darkness and melancholy. It is adventurous and cinematic, rich with subtle layers, tense and suspenseful, a ritual one hopes will never end — a nightmare from which one does not wish to awaken. Through their mysterious darkwave palette, World, Interrupted have created a monumental work that should resonate deeply with fans of -ii-, early Xmal Deutschland, Lebanon Hanover, NNHMN, Years Of Denial, Vioflesh, Bedless Bones, and similar purveyors of shadowy emotion. This is a uniquely immersive journey into the depths of the mind, and one can only hope Marta and Piotrek continue to expand this world in future releases.
