MALORSHIGA

Malorshiga is a metal band from Slovene Istria and today they are considered by many as one of the most important representatives of Slovenian extreme dark metal scene. They interweave atmospheric black and death metal with distinct musical elements derived from their land of origin. The band was formed in late summer 2017 when they were organizing a small single-day black metal festival in the form of a traditional village festivity, which is held every year. In roughly two weeks the band composed four songs and managed to organize and run the festival, which hosted their debut performance. Following Malorshiga’s inception, the band disappeared for a year due to academic obligations. In autumn 2018 the band reemerged, started playing live shows and refining their performance from a visual perspective. Meanwhile, the band continued composing new material and refining old songs. In late summer 2019, the band’s original line-up finally consolidated with an additional permanent guitarist and the band started recording its debut album Kvlt ov Vitis et Olea.

Malorshiga's debut was recorded, mixed and mastered in two weeks, the album was released on the 11th of October 2019. Kvlt ov Vitis et Olea is dedicated to the Slovene Istria, the band’s place of origin and source of endless inspiration. It is a tribute to old customs, traditions and history. It features the reworked versions of the band’s early material and a completely new composition primarily written by the new guitarist. The album was entirely self-produced and self-recorded. It features guest performances by Jerneja Umer Kljun on clean vocals and Dario Marušić on the Istrian mih - a traditional bagpipe-like wind instrument. The album was mixed and mastered by Jan Bajc Funa, while the artwork was made by Urška Vidmar. It was self-released in a limited number of physical copies, some of which are still available on the band’s Bandcamp page. The band started the album cycle with headline performances on a variety of shows and small festivals. They embarked on a two-date Czech mini-tour playing in Brno and Prague. One of their songs was selected as "song of the week" on the regional programme of the Slovene national radio.

During the 2020 covid lockdown the band independently set up their music on all major music streaming services and started to work on new material. In late summer 2020, the band managed to perform three headline concerts in three weeks, since there was a brief period when live performance, under heavy regulation, were allowed. On October 10th 2020, one year after its release, Malorshiga ended the album cycle for Kvlt ov Vitis et Olea with an exclusive performance in St. Mark’s salt storage in Koper and announced that, given the situation, they will continue to work on their sophomore album and take a break from live performances. The second album is currently being written and will be released when it is ready.
