Elegi - Bånsull (2017)

Band: Elegi
Album Title: Bånsull
Release date: 10 February 2017
Label: Dronarivm

Elegi is no stranger to the dark ambient scene. Since the debut, Sistereis in 2007 on Miasmah Records, Elegi has been one of the front runners in the dark ambient scene. Elegi has an amazingly unique take on dark ambient, which could be part of why their music has been overlooked. Hard to pin down, it could really be considered more of an experimental album than most others in the genre. Elegi works in the fashion of more recent artists like Flowers For Bodysnatchers or EnmartaElegi incorporates a multitude of instruments and sound sculpting to produce a work which is at once bold and engaging, yet simultaneously subtle and relaxing.

Ende - Emën Etan (2017)

Band: Ende
Album title: Emën Etan
Release date: 1 March 2017
Label: Obscure Abhorrence Productions/Dread Records

This is phenomenal, there is simply no other possible description for a duet that since its formation in 2010 has been treating us with a true form of black metal, yet full of emotion, full of energy, evil atmosphere and overwhelming force. Emën Etan is a real black metal masterstroke! All the tracks are powerful and this work shows us much more aggression than anything Ende did before. The unpolished and rough production just adds to the whole experience a certain dark malevolent feeling, it's almost like being thrown back in the late 80s or early 90s when black metal was still primordial evil force of musical expression.

Enmarta - Sea Of Black (2015)

Band: Enmarta
Album title: Sea Of Black
Release date: 30 June 2015
Label: Cryo Chamber

Sea Of Black is the debut album for Enmarta and is a result of Siegfrid's four years long work, it's an exceptional dark ambient release and not only, once those elongated melacholic soundscapes start to penetrate your mind the whole new imagery of cinematic music opens up. Sea Of Black is a multifaceted album, it is composed with many layers of different elements that are well combined together into a flowing mass of sound based on dark ambient foundation, and Siegfrid's training and service in classical music leaves a deep mark on Enmarta's sound with. The fluent soundsapes are cohesively painting pictures of isolated castles and dark towers, but still the whole album is in contrast to some of the latest post-apocalyptic dark ambient releases as it offers a bit more gothic and sentimental toned sound. The melancholic and in a way depressive feeling of isolation is present all over, yet in this starkly cinematic atmosphere there are many parts where some soft and almost tender passages bring a bit of brightness and serve with gentle caresses. Enmarta's Sea Of Black enthuses with its diversity, bold insertions, well composed soundscapes, interesting ideas and most of all with its fluent deeply melancholic cinematic vibe. It offers a well flowing sonic journey that every fan of dark ambient should perceive.

Endezzma - The Arcane Abyss (2017)

Band: Endezzma
Album title: The Arcane Abyss
Release date: 31 March 2017
Label: Pulverised Records

Endezzma came from Hell to this disgusting world by Trondr Nefas of Urgehal (R.I.P) along with Morten Shax. Endezzma has always had an unmistakable and attractive Norwegian style, and these guys remain true to their primordial style, yet they ventured further into the inclusion of distinctive elements like a clarinet in "Serpent Earth", making the music even more interesting, dynamic and absolutely awesome. They are spotless along with Aske and his brutal bass and Skriu on the unstoppable drums. Whoever appreciates Watain, Enthroned, Urgehal or similar,... this is for true black metal lovers, Endezzma is here and is one of your masters.

Enmarta - The Hermit (2016)

Band: Enmarta
Album title: The Hermit
Release date: 22 Novemeber 2016
Label: Cryo Chamber

Enmarta is a classically trained musician who has toured with Reggio Calabria Philharmonic Orchestra as a viola performer. So with Enmarta, we get a unique take on dark ambient. There tends to be more deliberate planning of certain movements within a track or the album as a whole. Being able to fully appreciate and manipulate tonal variations and to envision a track from top to bottom before ever pressing record; these things can make all the difference. Yet, there is often a downside to classically-trained artists, in my opinion. Studying the full breadth of historical works, learning how and why an instrument, or even a scale, does what it does, these things can lead to very mechanical and easily-anticipated sound structures. Luckily for us dark ambient fans, Enmarta has not fallen for these trappings.
