Helheim - landawarijaR (2017)

Band: Helheim
Album title: landawarijaR
Release date: 20 January 2017
Label: Dark Essence Records

Helheim brings us the incredible progression of their musical style in this magnificent work. Helheim are one of the founding pioneers of the so called Viking metal genre. They go beyond the most familiar bands branded as Viking metal. They keep alive the devotion to Norse heritage, so shrouded in mysteries from the Runes that are worth exploring. Helheim bring their best in this album. All previous shortcomings are just vanishing in this beauty. landawarijaR it's like flying between peaks and valleys, feeling vengeance and beauty, hate and love in a fluid dynamics that makes it feel like one fifty-five minutes long song. Helheim during their entire career are making, let's say, a similar evolution like Enslaved, adding progressive elements to their music, yet in a unique way. On landawarijaR those ingredients sound really avant-garde.

Heretoir - The Circle (2017)

Band: Heretoir
Album title: The Circle
Release date: 24 March 2017
Label: Northern Silence Productions

The Circle is very complex album combining many different elements into one highly atmospheric, emotional and coherent sonic form which shines right because of its refined versatility. In its basis Heretoir deal with post-metal, black metal and melodic progressive metal, it's like a missing link between early Alcest, Katatonia, Amorphis, Opeth, Agalloch and Agrypnie to name a few, but they implement their atmospheric sound with small amounts of shoegaze, djent, ambient and prog rock. It can be so very dense, extreme and powerful, but also so very soothing, melancholic, almost gentle, often very rhythmic but performed with amazing technical and compositional skill, with a delicate feeling for sensitivity.

Hidden By Ivy - Beyond (2017)

Band: Hidden By Ivy
Album title: Beyond
Release date: 24 March 2017
Label: Alchera Visions

Hidden By Ivy on this new album follows similar path like on their debut, but yet they managed somehow to make their sound a bit broaden. Beyond, is a fantastic emotional sonic journey that offers a lot. The world of Beyond is a world full of nostalgia, deep sensations, it's a world of visions and impressions, unnamed feelings, sounds that reflect longing for our old self. Lyrics talk about the search for the world that is behind the wall, behind a shut door, at the end of the road that we used to travel with our eyes closed when we were children and now we have completely forgotten. In here nostalgic dream-pop landscapes meet the new wave nervousness in a splendid way.

Hidden By Ivy - Acedia (2015)

Band: Hidden By Ivy
Album title: Acedia
Release date: 4 September 2015
Label: Alchera Visions

The musical output of Hidden By Ivy is hard to put in brackets, but what those two artists do is certainly giving some shivers down the spine with their incredible sense to compose refined and highly emotive music. There are found many different elements, from post-rock basis, to incredible subtle layers of dark wave, art pop, gothic elements, shoegaze, even cold wave, ambient, some jazz, a bit of folk and yet much more, everything put together into such an exquisite melancholic flow of refreshing meditative sounds. Acedia is a blistering attack for your senses. It has so much emotion, meditative soundscapes, melancholic catchy melodies and heartrending vocal arrangements that is hard not to be overwhelmed by it. Those constant variations in sound and intriguing art pop/rock compositional elements used all over are certainly making this album one of a kind. There's that vintage influence present, but the album sounds still very modern and fresh, also because of a genious production and final mix. Every single song, like as well the album as a whole has that hard to obtain pathos which captivates the listener from the start till the end and makes the one wanting to return for more.

Horror Vacui - Return Of The Empire (2014/2015)

Band: Horror Vacui
Album title: Return Of The Empire
Release date: 26 October 2014 (digital)/25 April 2015 (EU vinyl release)
Label: Avant! Records, Legion Of The Dead Records, Black Water Records

Treading on the musical and cultural border that links dark punk with goth, Horror Vacui is one of the most singular additions to the current roster of sinister rock bands. With its debut album, In Darkness You Will Feel Alright (2012), they already managed to recover what moths had eaten over decades of boring replicas. They merge elements from deathrock, post-punk and gothic rock with a strong personality into songs that keep intact the band’s punk belligerence. In that sense, Horror Vacui recalls the days when groups like Vex, Lords Of The New Church, UK Decay or The Dark - just to mention a few - freely moved among those shadowy punk-rooted territories, just before they splitted apart into distinct genres. Horror Vacui regains the bygone grandeur of sinister rock from a honest D.I.Y. instinct.
