Wolcensmen - Songs Of The Fyrgen (2016)

Band: Wolcensmen
Album title: Songs From The Fyrgen
Release date: 30 November 2016
Label: Deivlforst Records

Wolcensmen debut, Songs From The Fyrgen, is something of an epic heathen folk or dark folk album. The music, quite cinematic in execution, brings to mind images of victory parties in old world England, after the defeat of a sworn enemy. It is huge in its delivery, and yet somehow Wolcensmen only consists of one full-time member. With a genre-bending release that evokes thoughts of glorious battles, old gods and brotherly kin-ships which are all so far flung from our current lives it is no surprise that Songs Of The Fyrgen has been so well received. Albums like this don't come along everyday, we are looking at a classic in the making.

Wolvennest - Wolvennest (2017)

Band: Wolvennest
Album title: Wolvennest
Release date: 27 January 2017
Label: Ván Records

Wolvennest takes the listener in the world of rituals and occult practices with five lenghty tracks of unimaginable depth and psychedelic swirls. It's a cinematic sonic sound that blends together in a staggering way elements of 70s krautrock, doom, blackened psychedelic rock and of course plenty of drone-ambient infused darkness. Wolvennest or sometimes called Wlvnnst is creepy and throughout haunting, especially when both female vocalist, Shazzula and Marthynna, with their extremely sombre yet captivating singing style break through these sometimes repetitive bass infused doomy lines.

Wormfood - L'Envers (2016)

Band: Wormfood
Album title: L'Envers
Release date: 20th May 2016
Label: Apathia Records

Five years after their rather overlooked album Posthume and right in time for their 15th anniversary the French ensemble Wormfood returns with their fifth album entitled L’Envers. The band did quite a change in their sound if compared to Posthume, the avantgarde elements are still there, but not so evident, also the album doesn't sound so very depressive and is more compact and consistent, as well flamboyant, but overall it's so very theatrical and most of all decadent, with almost entirely francophone orientation. L'Envers is more than anything kind of a perverse and obscure horror stage play transformed into sound. There are many captivating catchy hooks and melodies on this album, but it's because of a rather avantgardish compositional structure of the songs that it doesn't really flourish out, it keeps everything a bit psychedelic and the listener is left in a kind of a suspension almost until the very end when the band offers such a captivating refrain in the "Poisonne".

Release date: 15 December 2015
Label: Cryo Chamber

Self Destruction Themes is a glowing success for Wordclock and a sign that he may be the most important new artist on Cryo Chamber to follow, and indeed one of the most gifted young artists in the dark ambient genre. This claim is all the more justified when looking at the attention and praise Wordclock has received from veterans like Simon Heath and Robin Finck. Self Destruction Themes is easily recommended to listeners of many different musical styles, given its blending of classical, dark ambient, industrial, ambient, and idm elements into one impressive album.

Wrekmeister Harmonies - Light Falls (2016)

Band: Wrekmeister Harmonies
Album title: Light Falls
Release date: 16 September 2016
Label: Thrill Jockey Records

Light Falls is the latest album from the ever-changing collaborative effort that is Wrekmeister Harmonies. Composer and master collaborator JR Robinson with trusty sidekick Esther Shaw, form the nucleus of the latest embodiment of Wrekmeister which breaks from tradition with a smaller collective of musicians from Godspeed You! Black Emperor and a more typical album structure of seven shorter tracks rather than one or two long compositions. Despite this drastic change in approach; the familiar sounds, themes and textures of Wrekmeister Harmonies remain fully intact while expressing new realms of atmosphere and emotion. This is a testament to the unique and personal approach applied to JR Robinson's compositions and his versatility as an artist. Light Falls is a confronting emotional experience with multi-layered compositions and mixed melancholy atmospheres.
