Swedish atmospheric black metal duo Grey Shores have released “The Withering Tree”, the first single taken from their forthcoming debut album Dark Waters Of Night, set for release on 4 September.
Guitarist and vocalist Martin Andersson describes the track as one of the album’s most emotionally charged compositions: “As with several songs on this album, this one began with an acoustic passage Vilhelm had been working on at home. I picked up on his idea and started adding black metal elements, expanding on the original harmonies. From there, we shaped it together, exploring the tension between the harsher parts and the atmospheric, ambient sections. The lyrics deal with grief and personal loss — that sensation of the world suddenly disappearing from under your feet.”
Although formed only in 2023, Grey Shores is far from a newcomer’s project. Andersson and fellow guitarist Vilhelm Andersson have long been part of Stockholm’s underground through bands such as Seas Of Years and Astrophobos, and their shared experience is immediately audible. Their debut feels strikingly assured — a work built on emotional weight, melodic sensitivity, and a clear artistic identity.
Written and recorded over three years, Dark Waters Of Night reflects an uncompromising vision: a seamless fusion of atmosphere, melody, and extremity. The album was mixed and mastered by Jari Lindholm (Enshine, Exgenesis, Seas Of Years), whose production heightens the record’s haunting, immersive character.
Listeners may detect echoes of Dissection, Opeth, Summoning, Alcest, Katatonia, or Rotting Christ, yet Grey Shores never fall into imitation. Their sound feels expansive and cinematic, shaped by melancholy but driven by a sense of forward momentum — a debut that stands firmly on its own.
Grey Shores’ Dark Waters Of Night arrives 4 September, with “The Withering Tree” offering a compelling first glimpse into the depths they intend to explore. Link
