Scottish female duo Midas Fall is back with their fourth album named Evaporate, and with this album the two girls, Elizabeth Heaton and Rowan Burn, really surpased everything they did so far. They clearly show that some music is simply meant to be timeless, it goes straight to the heart, and on Evaporate, which is one of the most vivid and emotive releases I ever heard, the transcedental soundscapes take the listener on higher grounds, it literally consumes you into the world where only dark elegant and ethereal grace exists. Evaporate is a follow up to as well stunning cinematic The Menagerie Inside (2015), but it shows a slight revolution and of course huge evolution in their sound.
Midas Fall use to create such an ethereal beauty elements from various genres, like drone, ambient, post-rock, gothic, electronica, progressive rock, classical music, celtic folk and other alternative dark music tones and undertones. They simply combine all this into one well flowing, shimmering and coherent piece of sound that is distinctive, varied and throughout captivating. Beautiful melodies converge with fragile yet strong vocals, everything is backened by a solid wall of ambiental sounds and it gets the necessary vigorousity and strenght from droneing and post-rock guitars. Most of the compositions have that incredible pathos that slowly builds up in tension, and certain segments are so very heart rending that it's almost impossible to remain cold hearted.
Plenty of acoustic parts are enriched with well used electronic samples and elements from classical music, like cello, piano, violin and yet more to bring an exceptional audible experience. Evaporate is throughout melancholic, dramatic, sometimes minimalistic, with haunting vocals, powerful, echoing and yet so very fragile, and the only bad thing is that the songs aren't longer, I would love to listen to this kind of compositions for eight or ten minutes, even more, and not just three, four or maximum five. Nevertheless, Midas Fall with Evaporate takes the listener on an devastatingly beautiful emotional journey that is long around 45 minutes.
Already the mesmerizing atmospheric opener "Bruise Pusher" with its savage haunting cacophony sets the tone to the rest of the album, but songs like is the rather experimental pulsating gothic grace of the chilling album title song, or poignant sonic drama called "Glue", sensitive but strong "Soveraine", incredibly captivating "Dust And Bone", absolutely elegant and melancholic to the bone "Sword To Shield", dreamy acoustic "Awake", haunting but delicate "In Sunny Landscapes", highly cinematic beauty called "Lapsing" and heavenly crushing rather doomy album closing song "Howling At The Clouds", are all pure example of how the right proportion between emotions, atmosphere, melancholy and rock energy should be made.
All of the songs offer plenty of incredibly well composed immersive soundscapes that bring shivers down the spine. Evaporate shimmers with a dark, gothic grace, delicate and brutal in equal measure, yet rightly dynamic, and if you are not afraid of an overdose of emotions and fragility in your dark music than Midas Fall are a perfect excursion for your senses. Evaporate is simply an incredible mesmerizing sonic journey from start to finish. It's an album that will take you above the stars, but it will also want to drown you into the deepest ocean. It's an album where every single detail matters and the listener can only enjoy in how every single thing is put into a perfect correlation.
