First of all A big Thank You to all who casted your votes and made this competition so popular! Also a big thank you to all bands who promoted the Awards in many possible ways! As you know we started everything with the Preliminary Round. There were 10 groups with 7 albums in each, plus the "write in vote" group. From each group two albums with biggest amount of votes made it into the big finals and the result is:
Congratulations also to NEW MODEL ARMY and their album Between Dog And Wolf for second place and ECNEPHIAS for their album Necrogod for third position !!!This battle for 2nd and 3rd place was decided in the last few minutes of the competition. Black Sabbath - 13: Black Sabbath's 19th studio album has reached top of the charts in 2013. The original line-up of this legendary heavy metal band has proved, that after all these years they still know how to compose a vintage heavy metal album. Intense and edgy guitar riffs alongside Osbourne's recognizable vocals created a record, that is a must have for any metal fan. Links: Website, Facebook
Ecnephias - Necrogod: Ecnephias were able to capture the true heavy metal spirit, gothic atmospheres, extreme metal parts, folk elements and make one hell of dark metal album. Nine tracks and intro deal with thematics taken from pre-Christian cults of the southern hemisphere of the Earth and the listener can be easily overtaken by kind of mediteranean scent and some folkish insertions. Enshine - Origin: An album that was in the making for almost two years, can make you go out this space and time with its splendid ambiances, great melodic soundscapes, strong and heavy song structures, meditative moments and solemn, yet bombastic escapades. There are moments where guitars reminds to Katatonia and there are parts where the things are similar to early Amorphis or even Paradise Lost. Enshine did a mind provoking album. Read a review HERE. Fen - Dustwalker: Fen returns with Dustwalker, an epic voyage through windswept and desolate landscape of England's Fen region, from where the band gets most of the inspiration. Dustwalker is a passionate, yet very melancholic and intriguing black metal album that must be consumed by everybody who is not afraid of a little bit more exacting listening experience. KaaK - Pro-Love: The new studio album of this extreme industrial metal band shows a band in a rather more mainstream industrial orientation like fans of the band were used to hear from them. OK, don't expect any compromises but a turbulent kick in the face. Pro-Love is modern, extreme, yet very obscure and technically perfective album that holds such a lot of energy. Kirlian Camera - Black Summer Choirs: The most ambitious album that Italian group recorded until now. Charismatic singer Elena Alice Fossi and her company did a perfect fusion of fragile tension, melancholy gloom, magnificent pop moments, cinematic soundscapes and powerful electronics… an album that draws you in and captivate you from the start. Joy/Disaster - Broken Promises: One hell of a mesmerizing combination of punk rock, post-punk and gothic metal! Fifth album from French outfit is heavy, groovy, melodic, yet melancholic and all those melodic driving parts will remain in your head for a long time. Mourning Beloveth - Formless: The fifth album from this Irish death/doom metal band shows the most mature and powerful songs till now. One of the darkest and richest in sound doom metal albums ever. Such an obscure, yet very passionate musical experience. Links: Website, Facebook
New Model Army - Between Dog And Wolf: Shamanic rock to the delight of rebels. On this new album, New Model Army creates a more atmospheric and cinematic style, which they achieve by the heavy use of multi-ethnic sounds and tribal percussions. New Zero God - MMXIII: A band which consists of experienced ex members from Greek cult underground bands such as The Flowers Of Romance and Nexus are back with their second full-lenght album. This time with more typical gothic rock based on post-punk tradition , great guitar work, emotionaly charged melodies and mature, yet very dark song structures. MMXIII is an album to be proud of! Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Push The Sky Away: Gently peeking through the borders of their comfort zone, Nick Cave & co. have released another unique, thoughtful and obscure album. October Tide - Tunnel Of No Light: Melodic death/doom metal in the vein of early Katatonia, but still with an unique touch. Tunnel Of No Light is an absolute must for the lovers of the genre as it draws you with ease into the dark tunnel with no light on the horizon. Links: Website, Facebook
Soror Dolorosa - No More Heroes: No More Heroes is certainly one of those albums that must be counted as "cult" albums and in my opinion is one of the best releases in last few years. Great compositions gain even more from impeccable production that sometimes smells a bit vintage and together with unusual cover artwork brings the passion of 80s. Read a review HERE. Summoning - Old Mornings Dawn: Absolute masterpiece! If you've searched for a gem within epic, atmospheric, and black metal music then search no more, Summoning did it! An instant classic, it can offer an amazing experience, either you are listening to it in the solitude of your room, while playing one of the Elder Scrolls instalations, walking in the nature or driving the car through some mesmerizing scenery. The Devil & The Universe - Imprint Daath: Once you settle your mind and turn on Imprint Daath you get swallowed by huge diabolic and gloomy atmosperes, many times intertwined with strong percussions, sometimes tribal beats and rhytms, ghastly keyboards and other strange sounds that penetrate the mind and draw spectacular images. The Eden House - Half Life: Just think that their core line-up consists of Stephen Carey (This Burning Effigy, Adoration), Tony Pettitt (Fields Of The Nephilim, NFD), Simon Rippin (Sensorium, Nefilim, Nephilim AD, NFD) and Andy Jackson (sound engineer with Pink Floyd,and producer of Elizium by FOTN). Then add as guests members of The Mission, Faith And The Muse, All About Eve, New Model Army, Mephisto Walz, The Last Dance, Red Sun Revival,... What can go wrong here? The Eternal - When The Circle Of Light Begins To Fade: Fifth studio album from Aussie dark rockers shows the most complex but at the same time the most emotional and elegant side of the band ever. It's like a perfect mixture of Anathema, Steven Wilson and Paradise Lost with a hint from 70's prog rock and oriental music. Technically perfect, melancholic and eternal. This is The Eternal! The March Violets - Made Glorious: This English pioneers of post-punk/goth rock were formed back in 1980 and only now, at their second rebirth, have a proper album out, actually with 16 featured songs is a double one. Made Glorious is a school lesson how to make original post punk with a drum machine. Tender, mysterious, sometimes complex, but in any way it's extravagant! Links: Website, Facebook
The Mission - The Brightest Light: Following The Missions story is like following the story of gothic rock and The Brightest Light shows how to keep the old fans interested in the band and yet sounding modern. Bands 11th studio album is rocking hard. Not really The Mission like they were in 80's, but still glorious. Links: Website, Facebook
Tristania - Darkest White: Darkest White shows at the very beginning, with the opening track “Number”, that was time to get a bit bolder, more extreme and raw. What we witness is something a bit heavier than on previous three albums. A lot of emphasis is on growls. An album that got probably the most varied response from critics in 2013. Read a review HERE. Vulture Industries - The Tower: One of the most extraordinary bands in the avant-garde department has served us another dynamic, a bit theatrical and coherent album.
