British legends The Danse Society are back with a new EP. The post-punk/gothic combo became known in the early 80s with their first two albums, Seduction (1982) and Heaven Is Waiting (1983), the two albums made it also on many lists of best post-punk/gothic rock albums from that era, while some singles even reached many high positions on certain charts. Later on many things were going on, the band also released in 1986 the album named Looking Through, but under the name The Danse Society International and soon after that they split up. After a very long hiatus the band reformed in 2011 and even though that quite some line-up changes were made since the reunioun, the band managed to release three new albums with a new, this time a female singer Maethelyiah. Now the only original member that remains is guitarist Paul Nash. The last album and their sixth one was simply called VI and it came out in 2015. Three years after we finally get a new EP with three tracks showcasing three very different sounding versions of the band.

Futur1st consists of three tracks and has a playing time of just around 13 minutes. The first track is "Scream", an old school sounding post-punk/new wave in your face thrown energetic groover that will for sure be a blast when played live. Really nice guitar work here and the whole thing reminds a bit to their beginnings in the 80s, but also those who like Siouxsie And The Banshees, The Smiths, Sonic Youth and early The Cure will be thrilled about it. With strong throbing reverberate bass lines that are the backbone of each song, and together with atmospheric and sparkling guitar riffs, quite playful and as well technical drumming, and of course very dynamic vocals, the band sounds better than ever before. In these three songs you'll find some almost jazzy parts, but fear not, there is also a place for some catchy rhythms and captivating melodies.

The second song is "One Thought In Heaven" and it flows somewhere between raw psychedelia and dreamy ethereal rock with somehow bluesy post-punk vibe all over it. The last one is a cover version of Nine Inch Nails' hit "Hurt". It's so deep, emotional and cathartic version and one of the best covers of this very track that I ever heard. Maethelyiah in this dark, brooding and slowly building up in tension marvelously done cover song gives her very best and the listener must feel all the pain and emotion this song evokes, just like the original one, even though that this one differs pretty much from the original and it has a twist with much more impactful powerful ending. The songs are all very dynamic, have all a nice drive and are a nice foretaste for the next album of which we can expect a lot. The Danse Society might be an old name on the scene, but their music, even if it has many elements that are taken from the 80s, still sounds fresh and on certain segments quite modern. The Danse Society today are approaching more towards alternative rock and post-punk with many unexpected elements than to anything related to gothic rock like in their early days.
