Terra Relicta enthusiastically reveals the track from its upcoming compilation: Di Auger's "Go To Sleep (The Secrets I Keep)", which is not only a great track but also an exclusive one, and therefore, perfect for the Terra Relicta compilation teaser.
Toronto (Canada) based Di Auger is a solo artist Chris Lefort, that has created a movement of aggressive but melodic music that encompasses several genres yet has established itself in a self-created foundation called "Neo Industrial Gothic Rock".
For the past several years, Di Auger has cultivated and developed his persona as an independent artist, the result of which is a discography consisting of multiple full-length albums, several EP's and various remixes, singles and collaborations.
His newest release, Under The Skin Of The World (2021) - original both in concept and execution - represents his first collaboration with producer and contributor Sean Beesley of LEP (Live Evil Productions), who states: "Di Auger has been a long standing pillar in independent music in Canada. But also an engine driving its growth. The Alter Ego / Persona is as fascinating in depth and content, as his discography."
Di Auger, a formerly educated pianist and percussionist, also hosts and DJ-s events in the city of Toronto under his banner "Rage", and has worked with many of the leading players in that field. He produces Di Auger's Ragecast, a monthly podcast bringing new music and old favourites and aspiring talent into the fold for two hours of dark dance in a streaming environment.
Today premiered "Go To Sleep (The Secrets I Keep)" has a somehow interesting story behind it and inside it. Di Auger reveals: "This song began development before, and through the course of writing and recording my latest album Under The Skin Of The World. It was during this process -when things began forming a conscious narrative for this concept album - that I realized this particular track wasn’t going to fit into the sound, mood or lyrical direction that the album was headed. I shelved it for a few months and came back to it just recently to take another listen and figure out what or where I wanted to go with this song.
It has been a focus of mine, as Di Auger, to not be locked into a specific genre of music. There must be, however, unifying elements that draw all my work together and make it, in its own way, unique. My attraction to dark, atmospheric soundscapes and melodies, the anger and frustration and sometimes futility must ring throughout the bodywork I'm attempting to put forth. I believe 'Go To Sleep (The Secrets I Keep)', has those elements and offers a glimpse into where perhaps, the next album may go. I have defined Di Auger as Neo Industrial Gothic Rock, and in doing so, have travelled the course of these genres of music returning, in this case to a more gothic sound, and I’m happy with that.
My influences have always been leaning toward this sound and continue to do so. I am a great admirer of bands like Current 93, whose influence on this track is undeniable.
I am also a fan of writing. I have felt that somewhere along the way, much of popular music has lost its appeal, not because of the production values but because of its meaning. The process, the experiences and the passion of the creators, does not come through to me, and I feel that is due to the fact that much of today pop remains lifeless, with no 'real' association to those performing it. It is a personal opinion of mine, perhaps I'm mistaken and simply not 'getting it' - either way, these elements, the ones I'm not hearing, or feeling, are the reason I am making my music today. I'm dissatisfied.
The song itself is about a confidant, someone close to someone else in a position of power or fame, or even notoriety, that sacrifices a relationship for continued success. The party sacrificed is fading into asleep, metaphorically or induced in reality, I'm not certain myself. While falling into this slumber, they are taking with them their secrets and their partners - something we all share - with them. There is something satisfying in knowing someone secrets, it's self-gratifying in a small subtle way to understand, from a different point of view, things that are transpiring around them. It is also sometimes saddening, and I wanted to capture that feeling as I so often do. I'd like to think I succeed in that."
Don't go to sleep - not just yet. Rather enjoy "Go To Sleep (The Secrets I Keep)" in the player below and later on the Terra Relicta compilation - together with all the other great tracks.
